For 35 years, The Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. has supported programs and services that serve countless individuals throughout the Northern Virginia area. Following the vision of our national leadership, our programs are aligned to the national program targets of the sorority, including, education, health, global poverty, economics, and social justice and human rights.
Lambda Kappa Omega Chapter is a very diverse chapter with a variety of programs serving our community. Our signature fundraising event, The Annual Book Signing and Scholarship Awards Luncheon has featured award-winning authors including Pulitzer Prize Winning Author, Isabel Wilkerson, and other notable authors including Gwen Ifill, J. California Cooper, Hill Harper, Trisha Thomas, and many, many others. Lambda Kappa Omega, in conjunction with the Educational and Charitable Foundation of LKO, awards nearly $20,000 in scholarships/grants and graduate fellowships to deserving students in the Northern Virginia area each year.
Through our annual signature service project, Kozy Kerchiefs, Lambda Kappa Omega chapter members, family, friends, and community partners/volunteers, participate in “sewing bee” where we craft special head wear (kerchiefs and “kaps”) for women who are undergoing treatment for cancer. The program has been an incredible success and we’ve touched the lives of women in the DC Metro area and well beyond!
Lambda Kappa Omega kicked off its Emerging Young Leader’s Program in 2011, in keeping with the Sorority’s signature program, whose goal is to impact the lives of 10,000 girls in grades six through eight by providing leadership development, civic engagement, enhanced academic preparation and character building. The increasing demands of the twenty-first century mandate our youth to be better leaders at a younger age, making smart choices with positive consequences.
Monthly, Lambda Kappa Omega participates in a program supporting at-risk young ladies in Fairfax County, called Foundations, holding regularly scheduled events with the young ladies covering topics such as Leadership, Self-Esteem, Money Management for Teens, Internet Safety, Health, and Physical Fitness, etc. We have worked with Foundations for over eight years and the program continues to be a success.
Other program include the support for the Community Preservations and Development Corporation’s Stony Brook program in Alexandria, VA. This program takes place bi-monthly and provides a variety of education and fun workshops for elementary and middle school aged children. Additionally, we support the Foster Care to Success program, in partnership with the Oracle Corporation, assisting with the making of care packages for college aged youth who have aged out of the foster care system and have no familial support. We host an annual dinner for the youth who participate in a summer program in DC. Annually, we hold our MLK Day of Service, partnering with the Reston Community Center, supporting a variety of community service activities. Lambda Kappa Omega volunteers with Relay for Life and supports organizations such as Heifer International in the fight against world hunger.

Lambda Kappa Omega’s work is made possible through the Educational and Charitable Foundation of LKO, and together, we invest thousands of hours of community service each year to support our community, provide social and support services to children and teens and raise awareness of major health issues affecting the citizens of Northern Virginia.
