About the Author

Sophia A. Nelson, Esq. is “redefining” the rules for 21st Century living and success.  The award-winning author, journalist, political commentator and former House Representatives committee counsel is working to change the game for a new generation of Americans in academia, the workplace, interpersonal relationships, and overall personal development.

Prior to becoming a freelance journalist, former White House correspondent and political columnist for JET magazine, Nelson served in several senior and executive positions within the government and corporate sector.  Among her industry accomplishments:  Ms. Nelson worked as a senior committee staff counsel in the House of Representatives, served as a director of Congressional & Public Affairs for the United States Chamber of Commerce, and as president & CEO of ALN Consulting, Inc., which she merged into a new practice group at the nationally ranked law firm of Holland & Knight LLP in 2004.  Her practice focused on developing emerging market and defense intelligence companies.

Nelson is also founder and current chairman of the Board of iask, Inc. (formerly I Am My Sister’s Keeper, Inc.), an organization dedicated to the relational, emotional, spiritual, career, and health of professional black women.  When she is not running SAN Enterprises LLC (her current communications and consulting firm), Nelson can be found discussing her top-selling/award winning book, Black Woman Redefined: Dispelling Myths and Discovering Fulfillment in the Age of Michelle Obama (released in May 2011) on college campuses nationwide, as well as in Fortune 100 corporate boardrooms.

Nelson’s award-winning book examines the inner lives and unique challenges of college educated, accomplished black women in this modern age of the nation’s first African-American First Lady, Michelle Obama.  Through a compelling combination of groundbreaking commissioned survey research and inspiring real life stories, Nelson presents a pragmatic and inspirational survival guide that takes the “mask” off of proverbial strong black women, helping them reach beyond the stereotypes that often limit them and the achievements that often define them so narrowly.

Nelson earned her bachelor’s degree in Political Science (Minor in Africana Studies) from San Diego State University in 1990.  She earned her juris doctorate degree from American University-Washington College of Law, after transferring from Washington & Lee University-Law School in 1992.  She was admitted to practice in New Jersey in 1995, in Washington D.C. and before the United States Supreme Court in 2004.  Nelson is also a proud and active member of Alpha Kappa Sorority, Inc.  She resides in Loudoun, VA.
